"O Amendoeira Golf Resort, que representa um investimento de 400 milhões de euros, associa o turismo ao golfe, através da construção de dois campos de grande qualidade, de 18 buracos cada, desenhados pelos conhecidos jogadores Nick Faldo e Christy O'Connor. "Nick Faldo, one of the most respected golfers of all time, is the face behind the design of Ponta do Pargo golf course, an initiative of the Ponta do Oeste Development Society, an organisation backed by the vice presidency of the Madeira Regional Government. The 18-hole course should be completed by summer 2008 and will be built in the west of the island, on a cliff top site with views to the sea. The site enjoys stunning sunsets and features one of the island’s finest lighthouses. After visiting the site Faldo, the winner of six major tournaments, considered the location ideal for the construction of a very competitive course. The future captain the European Ryder Cup team (2008) said he would like to design the most competitive course possible, taking advantage of the “uncertain’“ land. As such, he adds, the course will be very difficult and good enough for holding events on the European Tour. The layout will feature some greens and tees close to the cliff’s edge. The layout will also include a driving range and clubhouse.
Madeira’s vice president, João Cunha e Silva, who accompanied Faldo on his visit, considers that after welcoming Seve Ballesteros to design the Porto Santo course, it says much for Madeira to have another champion associated with the design of a golf course. “They provide a sure-fire route to quality golf for the island,” he commented."
